Reported unwanted telemarketing calls is a hassle. No one wants to do it but it is a necessary evil to make it stop and Public Service Commissioner, Brandon Presley experienced the stress for himself. He was casually relaxing when he received a telemarketing call. The idea of reporting the violation became too much of a stressor for him and felt it would be far easier to implement a tool much easier. That was when the Mississippi no call application came to fruition.

Beginning November 1, smartphone users can download the MS No Call app, free of charge. “Typically, people (on the no-call list) get mad when they get a telemarketing call, but 90 percent of the time they don’t do anything about it. This will make it a lot easier to report,” shared Presley. It does not help that it takes 31 days from registration for a number be activated on the Do Not Call Registry.

Not all calls are unavoidable on the DNR, either.  It still allows calls from charities, political organizations, and companies that you have done or are doing business with. With the new app, users can just paste the unwanted number into a line, click a key, and the violation is reported to the proper channels. It can also be used as a tool for scamming notifications, upcoming meetings, and to register for the Do Not Call Registry.

“I think we will see a major uptick in reporting violations of the no-call law,” added Presley.

Telemarketers are subject to a $5,000 fine per call violation but Presley knows it is not so easy to collect the funds. For 2018, he is hoping to advocate for a legislation allowing individuals to file lawsuits against telemarketers, pursuing damages.

To develop the app, the cost was about $40,000 but the fines and fees from telemarketers were used to fund the cause. If everything came at a click of a button, life would be so much easier.
